| Summary: Countdown to 2010 kicked off in Durban to confirm that the World Cup will indeed be in South Africa |
|
| Event Details: A reality that the World Cup Soccer has indeed truly arrived on the shores of Africa was witnessed almost by the entire world when the draw was broadcast live by 34 channels to 170 territories from the Durban International Convention Centre on the 25 November 2007. SABC Television Outside Broadcasts facilitated the event. This draw was of paramount importance to South Africans as it gave a unique opportunity to demonstrate the country’s ability to organize a word-class event worldwide. When President Mbeki beckoned the world in saying, “Africa is ready; Africa’s time has come. Africa is calling-come to Africa in 2010”, he was no doubt confirming the common phrase of the day that “Africa is the theatre and South Africa is the stage”. Good news is that while South Africa qualifies automatically for the 2010 World Cup, by virtue of being the host country, SABC Television Outside Broadcasts is ready to be the service provider of the big event. While rehearsals at Durban’s ICC were on track for the World Cup Draw, SABC Television Outside Broadcasts crew in Johannesburg were preparing to facilitate the Soccerex which was officially opened on the 26 November 2007 at Sandton Convention Centre, where about 5000 delegates, more than 200 exhibitors from 90 countries took part. Football has become so big that while some perceive it as entertainment, others see a global product on offer in the game, and the rest marvel at the profits it commands. Soccerex showcased the culture and business opportunities the country can offer to the world while providing a chance for South Africans to prepare for the World Cup. |
